About the course

Our City & Guilds Level 1 and 2 Land-Based Studies (Animal Care Certificate) is for anyone who is thinking about or interested in a career working with animals. Learners do not need any experience of working in an animal role or any previous qualification, just enthusiasm and commitment to gain new skills and learn about the importance of animal care.

Learners will cover the following modules: Health and Safety, Introduction to Wildlife and Conservation, Animals in the Wild and Their Main Features, Uses and Domestication of Animals. Plus learners will access work experience in our Doggy Day Care Centre or externally.

All learners, unless exempt from undertaking maths and English (already achieved grade 4 or above) will study maths and English as part of their programme.

Level 1 will suit you if you are just starting out and want to gain the basic knowledge and skills needed to move on to further study or get an entry-level job working in animal care.

Level 2 is for those who would like to develop their skills with the Extended Certificate in Animal Care covering:

  • Maintaining animal health and wellbeing
  • Practical animal feeding
  • Maintaining Animal Accommodation
  • Animal Behaviour and Handling.

The learners will handle and manage small animals, reptiles and dogs.

What do you need to apply for the course?

Entry Level – No previous qualifications are required for this programme, however, a pre-course interview will be required before a place is offered.
Learners without their GCSE’s can access Level 1 and move onto Level 2 as they develop.

Course Costs

Courses are free if you’re aged 16-18.

How will you be assessed?

You will be assessed via written assessments and practical assignments. You are also required to complete a work experience placement as part of our animal care course – you will be assessed during this.

Aims

To equip individuals with the skills for a career in the animal care sector. Career opportunities can include working with dogs, farm work, kennel worker or moving into a grooming qualification.
