Today I’m spending time with Chrissie Watson, one of Springboard’s Senior Delivery Officers, specialising in Childcare.

So what are you teaching today? “So today I’m teaching theories on development and child assessment methods. This morning I’m busy uploading an observation to Smart Assessor, then catching up with two learners, but I need a bacon sandwich first!”….

Teaching starts at 1pm prompt, and today Chrissie is teaching Early Years Level Two, the class are seated and filling in timesheets and handing in homework. Today’s lesson is on theories of development. Chrissie started the lesson off with a debate on Nature Vs Nurture, and then went on to speak about Freud, Cognitive Theory, Behaviourist Theory, Operant Theory and Skinner and Watson. The class all seemed engaged and enjoyed speaking about how different behaviour theories affect child development.

Chrissie Watson is one of Springboard’s ex alumni, Chrissie previously completed her level 2 and level 3 childcare qualifications here, before going straight into employment. After giving birth to her eldest daughter Chrissie needed a career change, and it was our Debbie who told her about the teaching and assessing qualification. Chrissie studied for this part-time, before passing it. The childcare assessor vacancy came up 6 years ago, and Chrissie applied, and has worked with Springboard ever since!

How long have you worked at Springboard? 6 years

What do you do day-to-day? “My days always vary, but usually it included assessments, support sessions with the learners, planning lessons, marking work, teaching observations. I teach both our Study Programme and Works Childcare learners”

What’s a typical morning like for you? “I wake up at 6am and get myself ready, I’ll then wake up my two little girls, get them ready and fed, then I’ll feed our dog, Max the Bichon Frieze. I then drop the baby off at nursery, and take my eldest daughter to school, and then I go to work.”

What’s a day in the life in your lunchbox? “I usually have a bacon sandwich on a morning when I get to work, and that usually ties me over until I get home on an evening, otherwise I might pop down to Greggs for some lunch.”

What happens after work? “I’ll pick the girls up then get home and make tea, watch Peppa Pig until the girls go to bed, I’ll then get on with marking work”

What do you do to relax? “I don’t usually have a lot of down time, but last week I went down to Sunderland Massage Centre and had an hours massage and it was bliss to just be able to relax for an hour and have no kids or work to think about!”

What do you like most about your job? “I like helping people and helping them get the career that they want, and help them to achieve their goals”

What do you dislike about your job? “I don’t think there’s enough hours in the day to give everyone the dedicated time that they need”
