Springboard aims to support the development of sustainable communities, where people have the skills needed for work and life. For over 40 years the charity has supported often the most disadvantaged individuals to develop their confidence, social skills, gain qualifications and work experience to increase their independence.
On the 22nd of July 2018 we will be completing the 20th annual Allenheads Big Bike Ride Challenge to raise funds for a new Sensory Room for young people with Autistic Spectrum Disorder (ASD).
Every year the challenge is manned by volunteers from the charity and encourages as many riders to take part as possible on the 47 mile cross country ride from Allenheads in Northumberland to Roker beach, Sunderland, raising money for worthy causes across the North East.
The room will benefit ASD students attending specialised training and support sessions making the transition from supported education to mainstream, real world environments.
We aim to raise enough to provide a range of stimuli to help these students develop and engage their senses within a safe environment that allows the person using it to explore and interact without risk.
The room will accomplish this through the use of lights, colours, sounds, sensory soft play objects and aromas.
Sensory Rooms are widely recognised to offer the following benefits for students with ASD or cognitive difficulties;
Increase concentration and focus attention.
Develop or reactivate senses of hearing, sight, smell, touch, and taste.
Heighten awareness and improve alertness.
Improve coordination and motor development.
Promote cognitive development by increased brain function.
Lead participants to explore their environment.
Provide security.
All funds raised will go towards the purchase of specific resources to complete the room in readiness for the students return in September 2018.
