Deciding on a career path is one of the most daunting tasks young people face. A career is something that will stick with you for the majority of your lifespan, so it’s essential you give it some great thought! Passion
With the average full time job hours at 37 per week, you need to make sure that whatever pathway you choose, even if it’s just loosely, links to your passions and interests. Whatever they may be, it has been proven that people work harder at something they enjoy, meaning you’ll not only be doing something you love but you’ll most likely reap the benefits.
Talents
Set some time aside to note down what you think your talents are and where there’s room for improvement. Once you’ve decided the route you’ll take, not only will it benefit you to identify what you’re good at this early in the game but it will also show a potential employer confidence and willingness to improve. A trait that goes far at interview stage!
Mindset
You must be in the mindset of becoming the best at what you want to do. Spend time thinking about what you want your day to day regime to be like. Don’t fancy the 9-5 hours? Look into an industry that offers shift work. Wouldn’t mind 6 weeks off work in the summer? Do your research on teaching. Whatever you choose, choose a career that compliments your lifestyle.
Goals
What are your ultimate career goals? What have you always wanted to achieve? Are they still feasible at this stage? So many questions to consider but ones that need to be answered. Not only will it help narrow down your final decision, but it also helps you to organise what your next moves are.
Experience
It will be beneficial to write down all your current experience you have before looking for jobs, this will help you to identify what you need to do to further your experience and how you’ll do this. Do you have enough to apply for a job straight away? Or do you need a traineeship, maybe then progress onto an apprenticeship?
