About the course

Social Enterprise is a programme of engagement for learners within Durham and the surrounding areas for those aged 16-24 (19-24 with an EHCP). Social Enterprise is designed to provide an opportunity for meaningful activities within an entrepreneurial environment, preparing young people for mainstream opportunities or a route to employment.

Students will learn and progress in a nurturing and inspirational work-like environment, using a variety of resources to support learners’ individual needs. Social Enterprise is an opportunity for learners to obtain new skills appropriate for their future, including further development of their English and maths understanding. The programme also helps learners socialise in a safe and structured environment with their peers.

Social Enterprise is about creating or upcycling innovative products to sell to the general public. Learners currently produce their own items and work with businesses and individuals to create custom orders as well. Profits are reinvested into the project or into work towards Springboard’s mission statement within the charity, to support ongoing projects and developments.

Learners will cover two pathways during this course. Pathway One which is Life Skills and Development will help learners to develop personal and life skills through enterprise. Pathway Two, Enterprise Project, will involve learners planning and completing enterprise projects whilst developing their skills.

The Social Enterprise programme runs from our Peterlee site, and travel expenses and lunch are provided. This rolling programme can be accessed at any time throughout the year and this course runs for a minimum of two days a week.
